10-year Treasury yield moves above 5% amid market pressure

    September 15, 2026
Facebook WhatsApp Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Telegram Tumblr Email Reddit VKontakte

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly moved above 5% on Monday, reaching a level last seen in October 2023. Before that period, the yield had not held above 5% since 2007. It later eased, with the official Treasury curve showing 4.97% for September 14. The rate started 2026 near 4.15%, marking a sharp increase in long-term government borrowing costs this year.

Inflation and energy prices have remained central to the bond market move. Brent crude traded near $107 a barrel Tuesday after approaching $110 during Monday’s session. U.S. consumer prices increased 0.4% in August and rose 3.4% from a year earlier. Energy prices climbed 16.3% over 12 months, while gasoline prices increased 27.4%, adding to the rise in household costs.

The Federal Reserve opened its two-day policy meeting Tuesday with investors focused on inflation, oil prices and interest rates. Its target range stood at 3.5% to 3.75% before the meeting. Treasury yields can move separately from the central bank’s policy rate because investors set bond prices in the market. The 10-year yield also serves as a benchmark for mortgages, corporate loans and other forms of long-term financing.

Higher yields reach mortgages and equity markets

The rise in Treasury yields has already appeared in U.S. mortgage rates. Freddie Mac reported an average 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 6.76% for the week ending September 10. That was the highest level in more than a year and up from 6.71% one week earlier. The same mortgage rate stood at 6.35% a year ago, showing the increase in financing costs facing homebuyers.

Major U.S. stock indexes also ended lower Monday as bond yields and oil prices rose. The S&P 500 fell 0.48%, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.56%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.29%. Higher Treasury yields increase the return available from government debt, which changes the relative pricing of other financial assets. Bond prices move in the opposite direction from yields, so the rise in yields reflected falling Treasury prices.

Global bond markets track higher government yields

The increase in borrowing costs has extended beyond the United States. Government bond yields in several major economies have reached multiyear or multidecade highs during 2026. Higher yields raise financing costs when governments and companies sell new debt or replace existing obligations. U.S. Treasury securities remain a major benchmark in global finance, so movements in their yields also influence credit markets, currencies and borrowing rates outside the country.

Asian trading on Tuesday kept the 5% Treasury level in focus after Monday’s intraday move. Oil prices remained elevated, while the U.S. dollar traded near a two-week high. The latest official Treasury reading still placed the 10-year yield below 5% at Monday’s close. Even after that retreat, the benchmark remained near its highest level in almost three years and continued to shape borrowing costs across the U.S. economy.
